Day #2 of the 31 days of writing challenge. But the first real day of sharing how I’m trying to bring more art in to my life every day. My sister, my little momma and I often have a conversation about how they aren’t creative. One visit to either of their houses proves just how wrong they are . My parent’s home is one that makes you want to curl up and stay. Inside and outside. We all know that isn’t easy to pull off. It is warm and inviting. The yard is like a botanical garden. Acres of beauty. And both my parents have now hit the big 70 mark in life… My sister’s house is the same. Creative touches everywhere you look. But don’t even get her started on how stick people are her only form of artistic expression.
So what’s my point, you are asking yourself?
I think somewhere around junior high, smart girls get the message they aren’t creative. I’ve been there. Ditto for my momma and my sister. Do creative girls get the message they aren’t smart? I think they might. I loved art more than anything growing up! Making stuff. Writing stuff. But when it came time to hit the college-prep road, that got lost in the shuffle. I was all in during junior high and high school to get the best grades to get in to the best college to get in to the best M.B.A. program. Ditto for my sis except it was law school, not business school.
Why can’t we empower girls to be strong, smart, and creative? Why one or another?
For me, it took almost dying (literally, unfortunately) for me to slow down long enough to listen to the little voice that was trying to tell me to find ways to feed my artist’s spirit. So while my doctor suggested I blog about how I stayed so positive despite being so sick for so long, I think my spirit had other ideas. My blog created itself.
One thing I’ve learned is that the more you play and create, the more creative you become. So while I’m very much a beginner at this pottery stuff, it is one of the things that has helped me be more carefree and creative in other areas of my life.
More Fall Pottery Class Pics!
Here are a few more treasures I’m working on this month in pottery class… Normally, I’m more of a decorate for fall but not Halloween kind of gal. But there is a story behind the bat goodies. Let’s just cut to the chase and say somewhat prissy girl asleep at home in the middle of the night. Alone. Even the dog is at grandma’s house. Something fluttering over the bed turns out not to be a little birdie that somehow got in to the house. #HistoricHomeProblems #SleepingInAHoodieUntilMorningLight #DaddyToTheRescue So bats have become a giggle point for my family.
I know the photos aren’t great. Took them on my iPhone at the pottery studio and it was a grey kinda day. The first one says “Bat Spray.”
Here are a few more articles on my new pottery excursions. Thanks to Julie and Christy (the instructors) for having wheelbarrow loads of patience with me…
New Kid to Pottery Class – I was a pretty sick pup when I worked my way through this six week class. But it helped overcome the double-whammy of the worst winter on record (seriously, y’all, we broke all kinds of records) hitting during one of the toughest points in my recovery.
My New Fish Teapot – Hint she wears a gold crown and has Hollywood style lips.
