Happy Countdown to Halloween Y’all!
Before this old house became home, I wasn’t much of a Halloween kind of gal. Sure in college we had fun with it, but after that… not so much.
Then a few things happened…
Our extended family expanded to include a few little peeps —and even a dog —who love Halloween!
And the Halloween fever in our neighborhood converted me.
We live in a historic area where people come from all over to trick-or-treat…
It really is a sight to see so many homes decked out for Halloween and so many little tricksters running around.
Literally hundreds and hundreds of them!
So the project I’m sharing with you today was one I just couldn’t resist. Especially since this will probably be our last Halloween in this old house.
Be-Witching Window Boxes for Halloween
If you follow my blog, you know I deck out our window boxes for every season and every holiday all year around.
But fall is normally just scarecrows, blackbirds, kale and pumpkins. Nothing too specific to Halloween.
Then when we were Up North (northern Michigan for those of you wondering where that might be) for the summer, I found these beauties at Joann Fabric in Traverse City.
And I couldn’t not put them in my shopping cart!
Because we have three window boxes on the side of our house, I knew it would be fun to have the witches legs for the longer, center box and the hats for the two smaller window boxes on each side.
Problem was… the hats were just hats. Nothing to stake them with.
Fortunately, I’ve encountered this before when decking out my window boxes.
Dowel rods and Liquid Nails to the rescue!
On a side note y’all… the day I tackled this project Up North was a spooky, eerie stormy kind of day.
Perfect setting for a Halloween craft party right?
But terrible for photo taking so I apologize. Hope it helps set the mood though?
First step is to attach the dowel rods and let them dry.
One tip I learned from playing in clay is to find ways to help things stay in place until they set…
Because the support pieces on the back of the hats are so much higher than the rest of the hat, you will need to use a paper towel or something to prop up the dowel rod until the liquid nails dry.
That keeps the dowel rod from popping off!
A few days later, I got down to business painting.
I somehow thought I would be happy with black witches hats that just had a colorful buckle on the front.
Not sure how I thought that given my love of color!
So I busted out my circle foam brushes and added one of my favorite designs to the hats… polka dots!
I started with a layer of pumpkin colored paint…
And then added a layer of purple polka dots…
And that’s all there is to this project! Super simple …
Halloween Window Boxes
Here’s how they look at the bewitching hour now that we are back home from our Summer Up North…
And a couple shots up close…
Once Halloween is over, I will switch back over to my Fall window box goodies until its time to decorate for Christmas!
