Creating a “Cute” Garage Door

July 16, 2014 By Shelley Leave a Comment

Creating a Cute Garage Door

One of the things I’ve always thought would enhance the curb appeal of this old house was a “cuter” garage door. (Yes, I do realize this is probably a chick thing.)Because this is an historic district, I coveted those old carriage style garage doors. But it was hard to justify forking out that much money when the old door was an expensive one in great condition when we moved in. Then a few weeks ago I discovered this! A little trick for making your door in to a carriage door…

My Dad is super handy so he came down to help. I know a smart girl would have taken “before” pictures. I will know for next time! Instead, here are my “in the process” and “after” pictures. We measured (mostly my Dad who is quite particular with a rule) and taped them in to place. Because this house and garage are over 100 years old, I always have to convince my Dad things need to look like they are straight rather than go by the rule.

One hint if you are going to do this is to have someone hold the hinges and handles in place while the other drills. We discovered after we put up the first handle that the tape had slipped ever so slightly. Unless I wanted an extra hold in the door however, it was too late to fix. I’m probably the only one who will even notice…

If you look closely, you can see the pieces of masking tape…

The “after” shot! So for less than an hour of work and under $20 the garage door is finally “cute”.
