This Girl is on Fire…

Decorating a historic home for fall

Decorating a historic home for fall

That Alicia Keys song has been an inspiration to me on the road to recovery these past few years. I try to look at getting so sick as a blessing. (It took me down a new road as a full-time writer in the health and wellness field!) This weekend, however, it’s running through my head because I feel -literally – like I’m on fire. #Flu!

While my peeps are off at a family reunion today enjoying great food and loved ones, I’m in a self-imposed quarantine. Trying to edit my fall photos and plan for my little Momma’s birthday dinner at my house in between doses of Tylenol. #AintNobodyGotTimeforTheFlu

Home Decorating for Fall

Every year, I start by dragging my fall boxes up from the basement. Deciding what needs to be retired and making my list for the craft store.I think using pumpkins and mums to decorate comes to mind for all of us when the calendar turns to fall. I also think of acorns, pansies, decorative cabbage, scarecrows, black birds and hydrangeas.

I tried to exercise restraint this year since it looks like a move is in our future next year. I’m trying to remind myself everything will need to be packed – and stored – while the new house is under construction. I don’t know about you all but restraint is not one of my virtues. #LoveToDecorate

Here are a few photos that I have taken so far. Since my site is new, I’m still working on my Home Tour and my Garden Tour. Would love to do a full on fall tour if I only had time…

This little guy gets his own billing. I know not everyone thinks they are cute but me? I love a scarecrow! I’m not ashamed to admit it. Two years ago when I was feeling like I would never be well again, my sweet Pops found this little dude and got him for me. He stands guard at our bar from September through Thanksgiving now. Trust me when I say that is an important job around here. (Hint: stay tuned in to this blog. We are taking one for the team and “testing” pumpkin drinks now. I will share the results soon!)

Quiet Dinner for Momma’s Birthday

Last year, my little momma turned 70. Because our extended family is a tightly-knit group, everyone wanted to celebrate with us. So we decided to have an outdoor celebration at our house. October in the Great Lakes region is usually spectacular. Ten days before the party, here’s what happened. Keep in mind the speed limit throughout the entire historic district is 25 mph … Gained a new entrance to the side and back yard that we really weren’t interested in having, and a mess we weren’t expecting to have to worry about so close to the big bash! #TeenagedMaleDriver

Now I’m wary of planning an event for either of my parents again. Three years ago it was 5 days from their surprise 40th anniversary party when I first got sick and ended up in ICU. Last year it was this. Hmmm.

Not wantin’ to test the old three strikes you’re out cliche, I decided to have a quiet, old-fashioned dinner at my house for her birthday this year. Just me, my sis and my parents. Throwback to high school days! Hope you will stop on back tomorrow and help me decide on which tablescape to use. It’s just me and Sammie Spike (our little malti-poo) around today and he’s not much help with these decisions…

What reminds you of fall?
