Gypsy’s Journal: Travels Around Northern Michigan

August 30, 2015 By Shelley Leave a Comment

Gypsy’s Journal for the Week Ending August 30th

Thanks to everyone who stopped in last week and left me such nice comments about my first official Gypsy’s Journal post.

If this is your first visit, the backstory is a few people have been encouraging me to share my weekly travels and projects for a while now. I finally took their advice and kicked off this weekly series last week.

The trick is I’ve been in northern Michigan for the month of August. So this week and next week will still be filled more with the fun places I’ve found to poke around than with my projects.

Unfortunately, Labor Day weekend means summer fun is over and it will be time to head home. So I will be shifting gears after that.

More projects and DIY and less zipping around!

Sights from the Twisted Fish Gallery

My little sis and I found what may be one of my all-time favorite art galleries! I was so mesmerized while we were indoors that I didn’t take a single photo. But I did manage to capture a few in their sculpture garden outside.

If you are anywhere in northern Michigan, The Twisted Fish is worth the trip! It is located in Elk Rapids which is just outside Traverse City.

Dragon Napping in Sutton’s Bay

Another favorite spot of mine is Sutton’s Bay out on the Leelanau Peninsula.

That’s where I met this little dragon…napping with one eye open.

He may have to come home with me before the month is over…

Restaurant Scene in Traverse City

If you are a foodie, you already know this. Northern Michigan –especially Traverse City — has become a real haven for restaurateurs and food manufacturing of all kinds.

Bay Bread is my favorite… I picked up a box of cookies to take with us sailing one day. It isn’t good for my waist line that I can open the back door, walk down about half a block and be at their front door.

I felt obligated to do a quality test of the peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. You know, just to keep my friends safe.

And what do I say about Frenchie’s?

While they hate this comparison, there is no other way to get a visual of them.

Remember the Soup Nazi? Think Pastrami Nazi and you will be describing French, the owner and chef. When I write my book, my experience with Frenchie’s will be in it! But the food is absolutely scrumptious.

If you are in TC, you must call in a carry out order to Frenchie’s. Read the Yelp reviews to better understand why you don’t want to plan to eat there in person.

No, it’s not a health-department kind of issue. It’s the grumpy factor.

Seriously. Just visit this place at least once for the experience.

Come Sail Away

Who wants to risk sharks and the bad hair salt water creates? Not this cat!

Lake Michigan has it all without the sharks and salt in your eye.

How do you beat this view from the bay?

And finally, who can resist a chance to drink a little wine (or a chocolate martini!) with a few gal pals and paint?

Not this girl!

Hoping to find some wall space for my newest painting when I get it back home…

This Week’s Sunday Funnie

As promised, I’m wrapping up with a funnie.

This reminds me so much of me!

Mostly me trying to be the lady my little momma tried to raise me to be and not the little heathen girl she’s afraid I really have become…

That’s it for today. Hope your week was as much fun as mine!

Thanks for stopping by…
