One of the activities that has helped me most during my road to recovery is swimming. I usually go about three afternoons a week. Not exactly sure why, but that time seems to be when all of the older gals in town swim. As I’m paddling away I listen to them reviewing their list of complaints in life. Ugh. I know aging can come with difficulties and impairments, but does hashing and re-hashing them every day make it worse? I say YES. This particular bunch of ladies are a financially set, Mercedes and Lexus driving crowd that seem to be in fairly good health despite the number on their driver’s license. But man can they whine!
So much of getting over an illness is staying positive even when that isn’t easy to do. Sure we all have bad days but these – pardon my expression – old broads do a lot of moaning and groaning. Why am I telling you this? Because it has helped to reinforce for me how important the power of positive thinking is in our lives. So I think swimming offers me aerobic and mental health benefits while reminding me of what not to be like no matter how I sick I feel. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
